Starfish International is a school for girls in The Gambia, an English-speaking country in West Africa. The Gambia is one of the poorest countries in the world with average income less than $2.00 per day. Many girls in The Gambia drop out of school at age fourteen to enter into a polygamous marriage. Starfish is an after-school and summer program dedicated to keeping girls in school, empowering them to be strong and compassionate leaders in their community. Starfish was founded in 2009 by Mam-Yassin Sarr and David Fox, a Gambian-American couple who believe that they can transform The Gambia in two generations through girls education.
