Stan is passionate about producing photography based Images That Tell Your Story. He is always looking for new and creative ways to impact the end viewer. Documenting a storyline, invoking a special memory, or stirring a vivid emotion, are his lofty goals of producing a unique and successful work.
The Life Long Journey:
Stan began his photography interest as a teenager when picking up his father's Argus C3 camera and looking at the knobs and dials. Using a more simple box camera, he soon had completed all photography courses and electricity courses in the local 4H club. Those were the seeds planted for an advanced photography hobby and professional electronics career.
He bought his first Olympus OM-1 SLR camera in 1976 and extended photography knowledge through parks, city scenes, family, and most anything that was a new found subject challenge.
In 1996 the boss at the Manufacturing Engineering day job came with a request. "You know about cameras and photography. We [the company] have laid off much of our drafting and drawing department. There are no resources for sketches or drawings to be made to include in manufacturing work instructions. Can you research these new-fangled digital cameras and see if we can include photos in our work instructions?" Not long after, the boss signed a purchase requisition for $10,000 to buy a Nikon DCS-420, 1.5 megapixel, camera system. Digital photo editing was then done in Photoshop version 4. Digital images had just come together with word processing via desktop computer. The next years of photography experience, on the day job, were very heavy in documentation of parts, mechanical assemblies, and electronic printed circuit boards.
2002 saw the convergence of Internet communications, websites that sell digital stock photos, and digital camera prices coming down to a manageable personal level. In submitting digital photos to stock photo sites, Stan quickly learned the importance of technical image quality - just to get past tough incoming inspections. Soon, he began learning that subject matter and composition mattered very significantly to potential buyers. If Stan was to earn any money, he had to learn to think like a buyer - somebody that would part with their money for the purpose of using his images. Stan started a serious quest to see and create images as other people would see and use images. However, because there was no direct connection between stock photo buyers and photographers, any knowledge gained was all third or fourth hand and being passed around among stock photographers.
On to 2009. A friend invited Stan to visit Focus Photo Club. Though the images and subject matter at the club was different than his usual stock photo fare, he was now able to be in discussions and critique sessions, and to learn first hand how other people viewed and interacted with photographs. Impact, Composition, and Technical, the competition scoring categories, helped tune his eyes. Participating in competition judging and critique sessions among the photographers helped to break some of the emotional ties to his images and try to view them from a colder outside distanced perspective.
Stan, his wife, and their interior designer, contacted Dayton Art Solutions (Kettering, Ohio) for printing and framing of his personal art for his home. The store owner was impressed with Stan's new Painterly Stylized Photos being produced and, in November, 2023, made agreements to produce and sell his works via the store.
In September, 2024, Stan accepted an invitation to host a Guest Artist display at the Sugarcreek Photography Gallery (Bellbrook, Ohio). His successful first wall art exhibit of Painterly Stylized Photos propelled him into becoming a full member of this cooperative gallery. Since then, he has also added subject and scenic photos among his wall art portfolio.
In recent years Stan has tried pass knowledge forward to other photographers through critique sessions, presentations, and seminars. Technical camera operation discussions are within his wheelhouse. Stan studies composition and is helpful to budding photographers. Stan enjoys being a mentor, teacher, and knowledge resource person for photography.
