Your local legislators are very effective to contact regarding issues at the state level (follow the current subcommittee bills being discussed). If your legislator aligns with your perspective on a bill—let them know that! If they don't—also let them know that!
Okay, I know who my elected officials are...now what do I say?
U.C. Berkley has 11 tips on contacting your elected officials:
Be original
Stay brief
State Who You Are and What You are Writing About
Personalize Your Message
Personalize Your Relationship
Pick your 3 strongest points
Be respectful
Include your address in your signature, even in an email
Properly address your messages ("Dear Senator (name)")
Follow-up
When contacting by phone, be brief and respectful
Example template:
Hello [insert elected official name, e.g. "Representative Miller-Meeks"],
My name is [your name], and I am a [insert position in the community that you serve], living in your district. I am very concerned about the proposed budget cuts to NIH-funded research. [insert blurb about why!—have you or a loved one benefited from NIH funded research? Are you conducting research that could lay the foundation for treatment of diseases? Are you a parent worried about attacks on science and how that will impact your kids’ education?]. I urge you to speak out against the attacks on science and proposed budget cuts for research. The US has long been world leaders in research and medicine, and it is more important now than ever that we continue this work.
Does contacting our elected officials actually matter?
Yes! Staffers take note of each call and message that comes in, and they will report back to the elected official on what constituents have been calling about. Now, imagine that we mobilize together and continue to call our officials—they will be forced to take notice. We must demand that they act to represent their constituents. Silence implies approval.
Please call as often as you are able to! If they don't pick up or send you to voicemail, then leave a voicemail and call back the next day. There is no limit to how often we can contact our elected officials! Remember to always be polite and respectful when calling.
