Backpacks for Refugee children
The organization we helped by making backpacks was for refugee children. We assembled the backpacks with the Ability Is clients, and then they were sent off to the children. I was not in charge of organizing this activity, so I don’t know much about the process, other than how much fun our clients had putting the backpacks together. The students explained to the clients why we were making the backpacks and how we were giving back to the community. Since this was around Thanksgiving, the clients also shared what they were grateful for.
I loved working with the Ability Is clients this semester. I have a special place in my heart for individuals with disabilities, and this population is one that I could absolutely see myself working with in the future. We had so much fun making muffins while focusing on social participation, practicing hand washing while focusing on ADLs and sensory integration, and then we got to make an amazing gift for the refugee children. Being a part of this clinic has helped me learn how to run group treatments and has also given me practice in doing interventions and being part of the therapy process.
