The entrance chant begins after the reception of the casket and funeral procession at the entrance of the church. Typically the organist will sing the entrance chant fitting to the funeral mass, Requiem aeternam (eternal rest), or play an instrumental version of it on the organ. However, another selection from the recommended recessional hymn list below, may also be selected at this time instead.
The responsorial psalm may be recited by a lector (e.g. friend, family member, etc.) or it may be sung by the organist a capella, by request.
The gospel acclamation is usually sung a capella by the organist.
The communion hymn is played or sung during the reception of the Eucharist.
I am the bread of life
Jerusalem, my happy home
Abide with me
Schubert: Ave Maria
The song of farewell (I know that my redeemer lives) is sung by the organist while the body is incensed during the rite of the final commendation.
As the procession begins to depart the church, a final hymn may be sung at this time. However, an instrumental piece played by the organist is also fitting, since the congregation often immediately follows the casket out of the church.
In paradisum
O God, our help in ages past
How great Thou art
Amazing Grace
Now fades all earthly splendour
Be not afraid
On eagle's wings
The Lord's my shepherd
