From Be The Neighbor (the mission organization we are working with for this trip):
Over the last 10 years, the Greater Houston area has experienced a number of climate disasters. Eight of them were large enough to receive federal disaster declarations, including a derecho windstorm and a hurricane both in 2024. The city has also seen countless localized and smaller scale disasters on top of those, including severe storms, power outages, and industrial accidents. As the fourth largest and most diverse city in the country, Houston faces compounding challenges of urban poverty, racial inequity, and climate vulnerability. Week of Compassion - the disaster response ministry for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) - has longstanding partnerships with organizations who work for just disaster recovery and community resilience in Houston and around the country. Be The Neighbor has partnered with Week of Compassion to join them in Houston this summer. Groups will work with one of these partners, The Restoration Team, to repair or rebuild homes for disaster survivors unable to recover on their own. They will also learn about the intersections of climate change and disaster recovery with issues of racial, economic, and housing justice. On this trip staff will help groups consider how they can help their own communities prepare for and respond to disasters. Be The Neighbor weeks are learning and launching trips, meaning participants will leave the week equipped to live lives of love, service, and justice in ways that are relational, sustainable, and dignity-affirming!
