We are excited to provide the opportunity for Greek-American as well as non-Greek students to participate in a Greek Modern Language, History, and Culture Program. Classes will be offered for all age and ability levels with offerings in the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Participants will learn Greek Literacy Skills from a certified teacher, while also studying Greek History, Orthodox Religion, Greek Culture, and Dance.
Athena is a long standing member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and has implemented various ministry programs for children and adults. One-half of Athena’s heritage stems from the Peloponnesus region of Greece, and she advocates for the youth’s participation in the GOARCH Ionian Village program located near Vartholomeo on the western coastline of Greece.
Athena has served on many non-profit boards for the arts and humanities. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Theatre History from The University at Albany, and she brings to the Greek school board a background in business management and theatrical production. Athena has worked on large scale productions with the Williamstown Theatre Festival, workshops with Shakespeare & Company, and has taught at regional colleges and universities. She is also a student of the Greek language program at St. George GOC.
As a native speaker of the Greek language and long standing member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Miss Diamanto Ktenas values a community that fosters pride in the Greek language, culture, and faith.
Diamanto grew up participating in St. George's Greek School, Sunday School, and youth/young adult dance groups. Over time, Diamanto traveled to her family's hometown in Greece, Karya, Lefkada, and danced/performed with the Music-Literary Group, "Apollon," bringing back traditional dances to teach to the St. George Dance Group.
Diamanto attended St. John's University in Queens, NY, where she was a member and officer of the University's Hellenic Society. During her term as President of the Hellenic Society, she organized fundraising events for various charities, planned community service outings, and Greek Cultural Events with neighboring Colleges and Universities in the city.
Growing up learning English as a Second Language is one of the factors that motivated Diamanto to pursue a career in Education. Diamanto graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. John's University in Queens, NY, in 2008 with a Bachelors of Science in Education, and in 2010 with a Masters of Science in Education. Certified to teach English Language Arts grades 7-12 and English to Speakers of Other Languages grades K-12, Diamanto currently teaches in the North Colonie Central School District.
Honored to be elected as President of St. George 's Inaugural Greek School Board, Diamanto hopes that her pride in her heriatage paired with her passion and years of experience in teaching, will help to build a solid foundation upon which our youth ministries and educational offerings can continue to prosper for generations to come.
Maria Dostis is a long time resident of the Capital Region with an extensive professional and educational career. Upon graduating from Lake View High School in Chicago, IL, Maria went on to earn her Bachelors of Science, and Masters of Arts in Education from Murray State University in Kentucky. Maria furthered her educational repertoire with a Masters of Science in Library and Information from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and addition studies at Columbia, Fordham, and the State Universities of New York.
Maria has held positions as a professional librarian, library media specialist, social studies teacher, grant writer, and administrator in Kentucky, Florida, New Jersey, and New York State.
Currently, Maria is a steward of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schenectady, NY, holds the title of Vice President of the Parish Council, and is an active member of St. George Greek School Board and Community Care Patient Advisory Council.
Maria has shared that it is her fervent goal that children of Greek parentage have the opportunity to embrace the Hellenic religion, language, and culture here and abroad.
Presvytera Catherine Sarigiannis is the second of eleven children born to Fr. Iakovos and Presvytera Maria Fitzpatrick.
Presvytera Catherine studied Education at St. John’s University, Queens, New York, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2005 with a Bachelors of Science in Education and in 2007 with a Masters of Science in Education. Presvytera is certified to teach Birth through 6th Grade and has taught both in private and public schools over the past 16 years. She began her career in 2005 at St. Irene’s Preschool in Astoria, NY teaching Greek and English to students ages 2-5.
Presvytera learned to speak fluent Greek and chant Byzantine Music while in Astoria. In 2010 she moved on to the Liberty Central School District as a substitute teacher and in 2015 as a full-time 5th grade math and science teacher.
While teaching full-time, she simultaneously fully organized and taught the Greek School, from 2012 to 2020, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Kingston, NY. This included designing the curriculum, teaching the Greek Language to students of all ages, including children and adults, and conducting plays and performances with the students for Feast Days and Greek cultural celebrations.
On October 14, 2018 Presvytera and Fr. Neofitos were married and in September 2019 he was ordained a deacon at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Resurrection in Brookville, New York. On November 9, 2019 Fr. Neofitos was ordained a priest and he and Presvytera Catherine began their ministry at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Schenectady, New York. On August 14, 2020 they welcomed their first child, George Nektarios.
With her years of experience, and love of teaching, Presbytera Catherine is truly excited about reestablishing an excellent Sunday School and Greek School program here at the St. George community in Schenectady.
Mrs. Ioanna Loula (Iωάννα Λούλα) was born and raised in Athens, Greece, and moved to the United States in 2012. Mrs. Loula is originally from a small village very close to the city of Ioannina, where she would spend most of her childhood summer vacations full of lovely and memorable experiences! Mrs. Loula received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Ioannina in Greece, and her Master's Degree in Social Work from SUNY Albany.
Her background in education and passion for working with children have led her to teaching Greek as a second language for over four years at St. Sophia Greek school in Albany, NY, and more recently her at St. George's. Mrs. Loula shared that she loves watching children grow physically, mentally and spiritually. "Motivating and helping each child love the Greek language and culture is a challenge that I am honored to accept daily." Her goal is to create lovely memories for her students that will make them curious to love, visit and explore Greece.
In addition to her professional career, Mrs. Loula is a wife and mother, loves spending time with her family, and visiting new places that are close to the beach.
Fr. Neofitos Sarigiannis, born July 18, 1981 married Presbytera Catherine Sarigiannis on October 14, 2018. They had baby George Nektarios Sarigiannis on August 14, 2020. Fr. Neofitos went to St. Demetrios Astoria for his elementary and high school years and graduated from Bryant High School in 1999. He graduated from the University of Athens: School of Theology in 2006 (2001-2006). Fr. Neofitos was ordained to the Holy Deaconate on September 7, 2019 and to the Holy Priesthood on November 9, 2019 where he received his first ever assignment as a clergy member in the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Schenectady, NY: November 9, 2019 until the present day. He previously served as Pastoral Assistant and Chanter at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection, Brookville, NY for 11 years: 2008 - November 2019. He has been a member of the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir since 2013. He was called to the Holy Priesthood from a very young age while serving in the Altar of St. Demetrios in Astoria. Working with the youth is one of his favorite ministries to facilitate. He loves family and friend time, handball, basketball, bowling, food, and of course chanting with his Presvytera. He has an extensive sales background and a lot of experience running events for churches and a large marketing company. He enjoys reading books on leadership, business, health, and self improvement. Some of his favorites are: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Lencioni, Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by Maxwell, and Speak to Win by Tracy.
