Welcome to Sixth Grade Mathematics! This year you will grow to become very good at problem solving. You will learn how to add and multiply using mental math techniques. You will learn many new areas of math including: place value, GCF, LCM, fractions, percents, decimals, expanded notation, number sequences, estimation strategies, prime numbers, divisibility rules, GEMS, cryptarithms, visual spatial awareness, other number systems - binary, polygons and polyhedrons, perimeter and area of all polygons and polyhedrons, measurements, substitution problems, square and cube roots, triangular numbers, and line segments. <more>
Number Sense Unit - Solving for GCF and LCM - Introduction to LCM
Review factors, multiples, prime numbers and prime factorization. Number Sense contest round (Jeopardy).
Problem Solving Strategies - Just Do Something. Learners watch and discuss the "Broken Escalator Video."
Mini-Lesson - Introduction to LCM. Children try their hand at problem solving an LCM problem using lower-order approaches. The prime factor tree approach is demonstrated to introduce process-driven, stepped approaches to solving these problem types.
Vocabulary - We develop a definition for LCM and identify keywords that are in problem that signify using an LCM approach. We practice looking for these keywords in problems. <more>
In your notebook, write down the keywords for the six LCM problems. Finish one problem not completed in class (e.g. Flashing Lights, School Bus, Ferris Wheel.)
Complete Marzano Card (blank) (with instructions) for LCM, if not completed when assigned yesterday.
Continue precursor practice (i.e. Prime factorization, prime numbers, divisibility rules.)
