ABOUT Vietnamese
Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam and is spoken by more than 90 million people. It is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of a word changes depending on the tone used. Vietnamese uses the Latin-based alphabet called Quốc Ngữ, which was developed by Portuguese and French missionaries in the 17th century. The language has six tones in the northern dialect, each marked with a different accent. Vietnamese vocabulary has been influenced by Chinese due to a long period of historical contact, as well as by French during the colonial era. Today, Vietnamese is also spoken by overseas communities in countries such as the United States and Australia.
