ABOUT TURKISH

Turkish is a member of the Turkic language family, primarily spoken in Turkey and Cyprus, with smaller communities of speakers in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. It is an agglutinative language, meaning that words are often formed by adding a series of suffixes to a root to express grammatical relationships and meanings. Turkish uses vowel harmony, a system that affects how suffixes attach to words, and generally follows a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order. Modern Turkish is written in a Latin-based alphabet, introduced in 1928 as part of Atatürk’s language reforms, replacing the Ottoman Turkish script. Its vocabulary reflects historical influences from Arabic, Persian, French, Italian, and English, while its structure and grammar remain distinctly Turkic.
