This type of learning is often called Interdisciplinary Learning or IDL by those that work in education.
It means that you will be needing to apply your knowledge and skills from different subjects into the one project in order to complete it successfully.
All of the projects focus on children developing their wider skills for learning, life and work. This involves them developing independence and interdependence as they are invited to engage with different experiences.
You will need to remember and use some of your knowledge and skills from Maths, Literacy, Health & Well-Being, Sciences, Technologies, Social Studies, Global Goals...and possibly even more!
We build collaborative communities which are able to solve problems within a project approach. We create linked learning experiences where teams are encouraged to make progress in working together - developing skills for learning, life and work.
P5 and P5/4 will be assisting Andrew and Lynne in designing and creating a DIVERSE CITY which is 'the same...BUT DIFFERENT!'. A city that is inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. During the project, the teams will have the opportunity to find out more about features of cities, apply their previous learning about diversity and discrimination, and use this combined knowledge to inspire their designs. As we navigate through this experience, we'll be unlocking information and igniting imagination - developing the skills needed to be city planners, architects, engineers and builders.
All of our projects are created with a certain set of design principles that enable you to focus on, apply and develop your attitudes, skills and knowledge.
Community Learning
Building and developing a strong community where you feel safe and supported enough that you will take more risks and challenge yourself to go further in your learning.
Experiential Learning
A sequence of linked learning experiences that enable you to progress towards the completion of a successful project - this includes the both the products that you make and the process of working independently and interdependently.
Problem-Based Learning
The whole project has an overarching problem-to-solve, however there will also be several smaller problem-based tasks (challenges) that happen during each of the days. These usually build into more complex challenges as the project develops.
Quality Learning
Each of the experiences will have expectations of quality. You will be working towards criteria and attempting to exceed it. This is about aiming for excellence and being able to give and receive quality feedback.
Reflective Learning
Learning can be even more powerful when you have a chance to reflect individually and with others. This helps you to make connections and secure your learning so that you are able to progress further.
This project is carefully aligned to Curriculum for Excellence , the Refreshed Narrative and the META-SKILLS. During the project, children are engaging in experiences which are designed to give opportunities for every individual to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to be successful learners; confident individuals; responsible citizens and effective contributors.
The project aims to develop skills for learning, life and work within an authentic context.
The project design is centred on exploring community, building relationships and developing metacognition, self-regulation and feedback strategies. Opportunities to develop and apply aspects of literacy, numeracy and, in particular, health and well-being will be built into the sequence of linked learning experiences.

GLOBAL GOAL 11: The children will be involved in exploring how their city will be inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
This project provides the opportunity for children to access a series of linked activities in order to develop their personality, talents and abilities - resulting in the design and creation of a prototype diverse city. Children will be able to voice their opinions whilst encouraging each other to be respectful. Part of the reflection will exploring how their city reflects the rights of the child and creates a safe, inclusive environment for its citizens of all ages.
Every project is designed to enable children to apply existing knowledge, deepen understanding and develop essential attitudes and skills. It takes an IDL (Interdisciplinary Learning) approach and places learners at the centre of the experience. Their thoughts, ideas and reflections will be incorporated as the project evolves - making each project unique to that group. The project design and ethos encourages and allows children and adults to engage in 'play' and 'problem-based learning' at different levels. Projects are based on a connected, authentic scenario - whether real-life or imaginary. Children are encouraged to explore and play with ideas, tools and concepts - collaborating and creating. They take on roles and learn about the world around them within a safe, yet challenging environment.
