Battle of the Books (B.O.B) is an optional reading program designed to encourage children to read, improve comprehension skills and give recognition to those students who enjoy reading.

The program is open to students in 4th and 5th grade only. The participants read from a pre-selected list of 20 books. In March, the teams will engage in “Battles” by answering questions about the books they have read. The winning team from Sunnyside will receive special recognition.

The "Battles" will begin with a 20-minute written round the week after Spring Break. Each team will receive one written round packet to complete as a team. (The written battle is closed to team leaders.) The teams performance on the written round determines the B.O.B. Battle Bracket.

Each team will name a captain who will be the spokesperson for his or her team when responding to questions. Only the team captain may respond.

There will be one question for each of the 20 B.O.B. books. The questions will be directed to each team in an alternating pattern so that each team will have the primary opportunity to respond to 10 book questions. When all 20 book questions have been answered, the team with the most points will be declared the winner.

Each book question will be repeated twice before the timer starts. Teams have 30 seconds for a captain to confer with his or her team before responding. Five points will be earned if the team responds correctly to their book question. If the response is incorrect, the opposing team will have the opportunity to respond to the same question which will not be repeated. The second team responding to a question earns 3 points for a correct response. The first team to respond correctly to a question earns the opportunity to go for a 1 point bonus by naming the author of the book.
