Part of our job as an EA is to make content more accessible for our students. Accessibility ensures people with disabilities have the same opportunities as others. Many disabilities/conditions affect the way people use the internet:
Blind and low vision
Deaf and hard of hearing
Physical exceptionalities
Seizures
Cognitive exceptionalities (Sheridan College, 2025, pp3)
Accessibility also improves usability for everyone and ensures inclusion and diversity.
Below are some ways I have used to make my website accessible for everyone:
Organizing your content (on websites, word docs, google docs etc.) allows people who use screen readers to find and access information quickly and efficiently.
Headings help organize the content of your document. (Sheridan Collge, 2025, pp 8)
I have used titles, headings and sub-headings to provide structure to the text.
I used accessible size and font to make my page more accessible by using size 16 and San serif ( Arial) style which is considered accessible because "16-point font for body text is good. Headings can be larger font size. Any Sans Serif Type is considered accessible". (Sheridan College, 2025, pp 7).
For sub-headings I chose size 18 and Headings are a font 24
Alt Text
Alt Text, or alternative text is a descriptive sentence used for non-text material, like images. Without alt text, screen reader users just hear the word "image".
Alt text are used with an HTML code to describe the image, or function of the image.
Adding Alt Text allows visually impaired users to get information about a picture (Sheridan College, 2025, pp 4)
Hyperlinks are elements in web documents, such as underlined text or images, that take the user to other files or web pages when clicked.
They improve usability and accessibility of the web page
People using screen readers can pull up a list of links in a page and have them read out loud. (Sheridan College, 2025, pp 10)
Instead of typing numbers of the keyboard, I have used bullet list feature from the menu bar to make it easier for navigation with screen readers.
Closed captioning or transcript is displaying any audio like speech, music, laughter etc in a video, in written form, thereby allowing people who are deaf or hard of hearing to access content.
I have provided a written transcript of the video to improve accessibility.
High color contrast makes text and images easier to read and comprehend. Good contrast helps users read text in bright sunlight or glare.
I have chosen a black background with white text for better visibility.
