Physical and Health Education:

School Wellness Education

Introduction

Here at Slippery Rock University, the Physical and Health Education Department prides itself on innovation and "keeping with the times." Noticing the trend in general unhealthiness in schools, the PHE Department completely changed their Teacher Education program to better suit the needs of students in the 21st Century. Thus, School Wellness Education was born. SWE is the culmination of a new age of thinking of, and subsequently the teaching of, Physical and Health Education.

By putting an emphasis on teaching students the tools and knowledge they need in order to live a healthy well lifestyle (both physically and cognitively,) Slippery Rock is a pioneer in the fight against childhood obesity. School Wellness also will give us, as individuals and educators, the tools we need to be forces of change for not just our students, but for the school as a whole, the community, and more. By leading wellness initiatives and committees within our communities (where we live AND teach,) we can truly be a driving force of change and inspiration.

PHE - SWE Program Transition Article

The article to the right, posted 26 May, 2016, outlines the department's reasons and ideas behind completely revamping the PHE - Teacher Education curriculum and degree into the current School Wellness Education model. As this article will go into greater detail about, the SWE model focuses more on the individual student, and meeting the social and emotional health needs, just as much as their physical health. Doing so empowers the student to lead a life of overall wellness, and gives them to tools the need to never cease in doing so.
