Under the
UGC Sponsored project on
‘Study and Research in the Indigenous and Endangered Languages of India’
The objective of this program is to invite the institutes and universities in India working in the field of Language Documentation with an aim of documenting the lesser known, endangered and indigenous languages of the country.
The SRIELI-Jadavpur University project team invites members and colleagues working in language documentation projects within India and abroad for discussing issues related to language documentation, archiving and knowledge dissemination. The seminar intends to involve those who are directly related to any of the following three parts indispensable in a documentation project.
1. Preparation for the field: Various types of methods are being used in the field to document data. Field work is not about just going to field and collecting data. Different situations require different preparations. Before going to field it is also needed to decide what has to be collected and how. As it is well known that documentation not only means collecting linguistic data but also focusing on other aspects of the speech community. We would like to discuss the various methods which are being used by scholars and researchers of different institutions to collect different types of data which also include linguistic vitality and anthropo-linguistic aspects.
2. In the field: an important aspect in the field is to ensure the optimum use of the resources available. Though linguists are trained to prepare questionnaires, conduct interviews or handle the equipment albeit we gather linguistic and meta-linguistic knowledge beyond our training from the field. In the seminar we expect different experiences of the field evidenced by the field linguists.
3. Data archiving & storing: Data archiving and metadata creation are the most important parts of language documentation. But these two aspects are often neglected due to absence of technical support or unavailability of trained hands. But there are various ways to do these. What are the best practices and how different projects are going with them is something which needs to be discussed in a common platform.
Hence the event is sub divided into three parts:
Invited papers/presentations
One or two workshops
A panel discussion inviting the principle investigators/ center coordinators/ advisory members
Papers /workshop proposals are invited from the following areas (broadly)
Specific field based studies on endangered languages, Language documentation, Anthropolinguistic study, socio-cultural aspects of any indigenous languages, data archiving, data management and networking, Ethno-linguistic studies, Linguistic vitality, Basic linguistic framework and writing grammars.
