As part of the two most important initiatives taken by the University Grants Commission during the XII plan period i.e. center for endangered languages for the central universities and major research project on endangered and indigenous languages given to the state universities, in different parts of India we all are working with a common agenda which includes understanding of the linguistic characteristics and the ethnolinguistic aspects of the concerned communities.
Started from April 2016, We at Jadavpur University are focusing on endangered and lesser known languages of West Bengal. We have accomplished field works in five languages Kurmali, Koda, Toto, Mahali and Lodha-Shavar. We have set up a target to come up with a dictionary and a grammar for each of these languages. We are also in the process of uploading our data via a dedicated website in due course.
