A Message:

Many of us, many of our families, have been living in New York for many years. Through this, there has been a network, whether it is mothers teaching new mothers how to take care of their newborn, connecting people to jobs, transporting people to receive health care, helping organize community events and fundraisers, taking language classes together, etc. Many of us have benefited from this network and grown better for it.

However, the community as we knew it as children is not what it used to be and, in many ways, not what we envision it to be for the future. We have often found it fragmented and fostering patterns of power and privilege. That is why we seek to create a vision of community that builds on and goes beyond what we once knew. Especially in these difficult times, with the COVID-19 pandemic exposing how broken systems around us are, we need a strong and robust community movement more than ever.

We began as a group of young Sri Lankan individuals who live in New York having conversations about building community. One that is multi-ethnic, intergenerational, and inclusive. Already through conversations and building resources, we have found this type of community to be present and available. We hope to continue building this vision with all of you, expanding on our community’s capacity to hold access to important resources, mental health help, support networks, improving advocacy, and ensuring that everyone has access to every single component of it.

At the end of our document, you can see the people who have contributed to this resource document. As we continue our journey, we seek toward greater community conversations and engagement on accountability and reconciliation.
