Course Description
This course is designed to provide comprehensive instruction in the speaking, reading and writing of Spanish on a basic to low intermediate levels. Students will learn basic grammar in an oral/aural context in each class. The students are expected to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, basic reading and writing as well as an appreciation of the Spanish/Hispanic culture. Students will be exposed to native speakers of Spanish in interactive computer- based programs, and videos on Spain and Hispanic-America. Also included in this course, students will be exposed to learning about cultural and societal traditions of Spanish-Speaking countries.
Materials
Textbook: Descubre1: Lengua y Cultura del Mundo Hispanico (must be coved with a cloth cover)
Workbook: Descubre 1: Cuaderno de Practica
**3 ring binder with separation tabs for worksheets, tests, quizzes, notes, etc. (3 inch is sufficient)
**Loose leaf paper
**Notebook dedicated exclusively to Spanish (keep inside the binder)
**Red pen (or pencil) for checking and correcting activities.
**Two highlighters. One yellow highlighter for verbs and the other any other color for general
Vocabulary.
**Colored pencils or thin markers
Organize the Spanish Binder as follows:
1. Spiral notebook (for notes taken during lectures and presentations)
2. vocabulary hand-outs
3. verb -graphic organizers and foldable notes
4. Cultural information (History, poems, songs, geography etc.)
5. quizzes and tests
**All notes and hand-outs must have your full name, date and title by topic.
Classroom expectations:
** Always be on time. Class starts on time. When you enter the classroom, please be seated at your assigned seat. (No walking around without permission)
** When the bell rings, be ready to start working on the daily bell assignment. It will be written on the board or a check in hand-out. Please stay focus on the given assignment.
** Bring all classroom materials every day. Please take good care of your assigned textbook. We need to make sure that the books remain in good condition as long as possible. You!! Will be responsible for your assigned textbook.
** Please don’t bring FOOD, DRINKS, and/or GUM in the classroom (with the exception of water inside a clear container) please help maintain a clean learning environment.
** Follow ALL of the school’s code of conduct expectations. (yes, that means dress code issues and cell phone issues too) Your cell phones, headphones, earbuds, and any other unauthorized electronic devices must be turned off and put away once you are in the classroom, unless it is being used as a learning tool as assigned by the teacher.. NO texting or playing games etc. during Class 😊. We all need to stay on task in order to achieve excellence.
** You must participate in ALL classroom activities in order to fully achieve the learning goals for this class. My wish for you as my student is that you can become a successful independent learner and feel confident in your ability to use Spanish as an asset in your future carrier .

expected to know the vocabulary and verb concepts very well
through- out the entire semester and not just for testing purposes.

The Grade for the course will consist of the following:
