The virtual Fall 2020 Zone Meeting for SPS Zone 7 was held on October 16-17, 2020, in conjunction with the Fall 2020 Meeting of the Ohio-Region Section of the American Physical Society (OSAPS).
Students who wished to make an oral or poster presentation at the OSAPS meeting should have submitted an abstract by October 2 following the instructions on the meeting's web site. You will need to set up a free APS account to register and submit. Note, however, that free membership is available for students who are first-time APS members (yes, it's really free!), so you might as well join!
Students who are not presenting at the OSAPS meeting do not need to be an APS or SPS member to participate in the SPS zone meeting activities. But, of course, we encourage all students to join SPS to take advantage of its great benefits!
Note that all the zone meeting events were scheduled around the OSAPS meeting events so that students can attend both. All activities were held remotely via Zoom or Discord as indicated. (Last Updated: 20 October 2020)
3:00-3:45 pm: Zone 7 Meeting Kick-off [held via Zoom]
The 2020 Fall Zone 7 Meeting kicked-off with a chance for students to meet other students in other chapters around the zone. Associate Zone Councilor, Grant Mathias, and Zone Councilor, Prof. Ronald Kumon, also provided an overview of news, events, and programs from the SPS National Council.
If you missed it, a recording of the meeting kick-off has been posted on the SPS Zone 7 YouTube page. The slides from the presentation have also been posted.
7:30 pm - end : Zone 7 Virtual Board Games [Discord]
We had virtual board game night! The links to all the games and voice chat channels were found in the Zone 7 section of the SPS Zone 7 Discord Channel.
12:30-1:30 pm: Zone 7 Kahoot & Virtual Scavenger Hunt [held via Zoom]
We next planned a physics trivia contest via Kahoot and a virtual scavenger hunt.

We closed out the meeting with a talk by Dr. Charles Holbrow from Colgate University on Madame Curie and the Discovery of Nuclear Physics.
Description:
The story of Madame Curie, her husband, and daughter, and their characters and discoveries, and how they fit into the sequence of dramatic developments in physics between the discovery of radioactivity in 1896 and the discovery of nuclear fission in 1938.
Throughout the meeting, we had attendees from Grove City College, John Carroll University, Kettering University, Lawrence Technological University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, SUNY-Fredonia, and the Ohio-Region Section of the American Physical Society, among others. Check back on the SPS Zone 7 web site for announcements about future zone meetings.
