My family and I have been going to this vet since I moved to the Asheville area in 2007. They are reasonable, discuss all possible solutions to an issue while letting us make the decisions. They have always taken great care of my pets, and I have a great relationship with them. For emergencies, they generally refer us to MedVet on Brevard Rd.
This is the closest animal hospital that is open 24/7 to me. My parents have also taken their dogs here. While Spruce has never been seen here before, this is the location that is in the back of my mind just in case.
There may be a closer option to you depending on the time and day of the week.
I take Apoquel for my allergies. They present in a variety of symptoms, including ear infections, skin rashes, loss of hair, hot spots, and digestive issues.
Ear Discomfort: For general discomfort, the Zymox ear drops are the way to go. They coat the ear and provide relief from burning/itching. They don't feel as bad as the flushing/cleaning ear drops, so I tolerate them much better. I still hate getting ear drops, so if you have to give them to me, I like to know ahead of time that there will be treats as a reward.
Digestive Issues: Sometimes it's allergies, sometimes it's anxiety, but every now and again I get the shits.
Immodium (anti-diarrheal) helps a lot. Start with one, and if that doesn't help within an hour or two, give me another. I can take doses of immodium twice a day, but no longer than three days at a time.
If Immodium is not helping, it might be a bacterial infection and I would need to go to the vet.
While my tummy is upset, I might need to go on more walks until I can get regular again. The Fortiflora probiotic pouches help a lot too.
Skin rashes/Inflamed Paws: Sometimes it's allergies, sometimes I get into something that my skin doesn't like! This especially happens if I get into water and am not rinsed off, and it happens to my paws from dewy grass too.
Clean the affected area, then apply some TrizChlor antimicrobial mousse.
It's most effective to treat a rash when I'm home and relaxing for a while so I don't get dirty/reintroduce contaminants.
Hot Spots: They happen from time to time, but they are very uncomfortable for me. You will notice me smelling and licking an area of my skin, usually around my butt, before you notice the spot itself.
I have an Healing Tree T-Zone is a tea tree oil cream that clears up hotspots better than anything else!
Chicken. Mom thinks I'm allergic to chicken.
