Troupes may enter six (6) Performance IEs and seven (7) Technical IEs in ANY combination, however each student can only enter one event. Troupes are not limited to only one (1) event in each category.
For example, troupes can have 2 duet acting, 3 solo musicals and 1 group musical. See our Individual & Group Events FAQs for additional specific examples.
National Qualifiers: If students achieve the highest scores, Individual and Group events, Playwriting, Musical Composition, and Short Film are eligible to advance to National Competitions at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Performance IEs: Solo Musical, Duet Musical, Group Musical, Monologue, Duet Acting, Group Acting

Schools are not limited to one event per category.
Troupes are allowed to have any six (6) performance IEs - whatever six best fit your students' strengths (ex: 3 monologues, 2 duet musicals, and a group musical).
Troupes are allowed to submit any seven (7) technical events in any combination (ex: 3 stage managers, 2 lighting designs, and 2 scenic designs).
Is there Acceptable & Unacceptable Material?
Acceptable material for all Individual Performance Events:
Published scripts written for the theater ONLY
Songs from a musical that have been written for the theater (regardless of its previous publication as a classical or popular song).
Unacceptable material for Individual Performance Events:
Poetry
Fiction
Scripts or songs from films
Scripts or songs from television
Stand-alone monologues found on the internet or in monologue books
Popular songs not used in a published work for the theater
Classical songs not used in a published work for the theater.
In monologues, the skills that will be measured are:
Use of transitions into and out of character
Ability to create a believable character
Communication of objective, tactics, and relationships
Use of focus and concentration
Integration of voice, body, movement, and staging.
• Begin with an introduction (slating). The introduction must include only:
o the entrant’s names,
o troupe number,
o title of both selections, and
o name of the playwright.
• Remain within strict time limits.
o Time will begin once a performer begins acting after the conclusion of the introduction (slating).
o Monologues are not to exceed three minutes. • Prepare two selections.
o Monologues should represent two contrasting selections (may be different in period, style or mood).
o Each selection should be approximately one and one half minutes each.
o Each selection should reflect an important moment in the play.
o Only one character from each play may be portrayed in each selection.
• Choose appropriate material.
o Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre.
o Material from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or film is prohibited.
o Stand-alone monologues found online or in monologue books are prohibited.
• Follow strict limits on clothing and props.
o Props (including hand held props), costumes, or theatrical makeup are not allowed.
o One chair may be used.
o Entrants must wear all black.
o Entrants must wear dark, preferably black, shoes.
o Clothing should be professional yet allow easy movement for the actor to accommodate the action of the performance.
o Entrants should refrain from wearing anything that might distract the adjudicators.
