The Ghost Kings is an adventure novel set in South Africa that incorporates fantasy and supernatural elements alongside Zulu lore. The story follows an English missionary's daughter, Rachel Dove, and her relationship with a Zulu tribe and a hidden civilization.
Haggard based the core premise on a specific, strange myth told to him by the native Zulus. According to the legend, a beautiful and brave white girl was believed to "hold the spirit" of a legendary goddess, also white, known as "Zoola" (meaning "Heaven" or "Lady of the Zulus"). This figure had great power in the land before the historic Battle of Blood River, and the Zulus were often shy to speak about the tale with outsiders.
By blending this specific, intriguing myth with his deep knowledge of Zulu culture and the South African landscape, Haggard created a novel that is a mix of historical adventure and fantasy, characteristic of his "lost world" genre.
