This systematic review aims to synthesise the effects of current shoe models in each shoe category and their specific features on running economy, performance and biomechanics. Electronic databases such as Web of Science, SPORTDiscuss, PubMed and Scopus were used to identify studies from 2015 to date. Due to the existing lack of consensus to define running shoes, only studies that specified the shoe brand and models used to assess their effect over runners with a certain level of fitness and training routine were included. Quality assessment of cross-sectional and intervention studies was conducted by three independent raters using a modified version of the Quality Index and the PEDro scale, respectively. A total of 36 articles were finally included, involving the analysis of 61 different shoe models over 10 different topics (i.e., running economy, running performance, spatiotemporal parameters, ground reaction forces, joint stiffness, achilles tendon, plantar pressure, tibiofemoral load, foot strike pattern and joint coordination). With this review, runners and practitioners in the field that are concerned about selecting a suitable shoe for performance, training, or injury prevention functionality have clear information about the effects of the current shoe models and their specific features.

Here I hope to help breakdown the differences and help you find the right option for running. In particular, we are going to focus on a HOKA Clifton vs Bondi in fit, feel and function. Theses are two of their most popular shoes and for good reason!

Switching running shoes is a TERRIFYING prospect, but I was in need of a change. My knees had been aching for months and my chiropractor had started to point out how my foot was rolling in pretty hard on my old shoes.

While I DO NOT recommend stability shoes for most runners, the Hoka is designed to provide some base level stability thanks to the wider platform of the midsole. This is a great way to get the benefits without changing your stride or hiding the fact that you have weak muscles.

The standard saying is replace your shoes every 500 miles and these shoes are the same. The durability has been really great, as noted I have been through a number of pairs and never had one that I felt needed to be tossed early due to anything coming apart or feeling worn out.

Whatever you have found to be your sweet spot in the past will be roughly the same here. I.e. larger runners, big men, etc often find they need to replace shoes quicker due to breakdown, others find that more treadmill runs means maybe their shoes are good for 800 miles.

I am madly in love with the new Stinson ATRs. My favorite shoes by Hoka ever. Close second would be the Bondi 2 and third would be the Huaka! I am a Hoka fan for life! Great review. Can't wait to try the Clifton 2!

My recent post @GoneForARuncom #runforBeer10K recap!

I believe the particular running shoe you need is very dependent on your running form, foot strike, surface and personal preference. If forced I would say these are the best marathon running shoes.

Confused by what are the different types of running shoes. Have no fear, I am hear to give you a quick and easy breakdown, along with a recommendation from shoes that I have tested over the years or heard from other runners really met their needs.

Fine this is probably not the best reason ever, but I LOVE running shoes.I love the colors matching my shorts. I love that some pairs make me feel crazy fast and others feel like a warm blanket allowing me to get comfy to run for hours.

I started keeping a couple pairs of running shoes that are retired from mileage, but still feel really good by the front door. Now I grab them instead of my current trainers for a walk. Of course, eventually they all make their way back to the running store for recycling!

I definitely know this is something I need to do and, although I have about 6 pairs of "running" shoes, I only run in one of them. Yep. The other 5 are for either racing, cross training or shoes I thought would be good for running. This is great advice that I WILL be taking!

I definitely agree! While I do stick to Brooks, I have 3 different models that I rotate between. There is such a different in the kind of shoes that work well for speed workouts vs long runs!

My recent post Sunday Meals and Recovery vs Rest Days

I can understand intellectually why I need to rotate running shoes but I definitely don't do it regularly! I just get in the habit of putting the same ones on. Plus, any excuse to buy new running shoes, right??

I've been rotating shoes for a long time and actually it still surprises me that many people are not aware that they should be rotating their shoes. It's been a huge help with my arches and keeping my ankle muscles stronger. Feet are no different than muscles. You have to keep them guessing.

My recent post Fueling Between Seasons, Pumpkin Acai Bowl

I have about ten pairs of athletic shoes but I teach aerobics, do strength classes, and, also, run so I have multiple pairs for each. Right now, I have two that I rotate through for running.

My recent post Back on Track

I just made this change about three weeks ago, and I'm so happy with it that I'm going to keep rotating shoes! For a while now I've kept two of the same style in rotation, so I can let shoes "bounce back" between runs. Now I've added in a lighter shoe for speed and tempo runs and can definitely feel it improving those muscles in my feet and ankles. Plus, it's fun to have different colors and shoes to choose from!

The secret is in the sole of the shoes, which have an open-pod, zero-gravity EVA foam construction made from carbon-capture emissions. The outer sole cushions each landing, and a springboard inner sole helps propel the wearer forward with each stride.

Now the company is moving forward with an even more innovative approach to circularity: its Cyclon program introduces a circular subscription-based distribution model for high-performance running shoes and t-shirts, all made from castor beans.

The Cyclon subscription model positions running as a service. Subscribers pay $30 per month and can get a fresh pair of running shoes whenever needed, sending the old ones back to be recycled. At the price, a six-month subscription works out to total the average industry price for a high-performance running shoe.

The heaviest runners may need a new pair every four months, and others may take longer, but the idea is subscribers never really own the shoes; they are simply paying for the privilege and doing their part for the environment.

The other group of Cyclon customers is motivated by its sustainability promise and the drive to reduce their footprint on the planet. These customers are inspired not just by the subscription offer but also by the material the shoes are made from: castor beans.

Distance shoes tend to be either fast, responsive and lightweight; or comfortable, cushioned and heavier. On has come up with a shoe design that genuinely delivers on both fronts, built around two main innovations. Let's dive in to our On Running shoes review.

Whilst the key innovation in On running shoes is in the CloudTec sole, the seamless uppers also play an important role, continuing the trick of balancing comfort with ultra light weight. The uppers hardly add any weight to the shoe, but the mesh is extremely strong and reinforced with taping in key locations to provide a secure, supported feel. On Running trainers are extremely breathable, and the mesh is springy enough to allow your foot to move adequately through the stride.

The Cloud is the most street-styled shoe, a blend of style and performance. Its speed lace system makes it easy to slip on and off, and it is ideal for an everyday shoe, running anything from errands to a 5k. The Cloud running shoes combines the best of both worlds in that it is very lightweight but also well-cushioned.

The Cloud X is generally chosen by runners who do not define themselves by just one sport. The Cloud X is On's most versatile shoe, with a superb combination of stability, lightweight (less than 240g), and highly reactive. It was updated in 2020 and is my favourite mixed sport workout shoe. A great option if you're after a pair of supportive pair of running shoes.

In terms of fit and feels, The Cloudflyer fits slightly wider feet than most On Running models. It has a really plush tongue which helps comfort. One complaint some people have is about the thin laces.

In the most recent update of the their shoes, On has re-engineered the midsole with even more cushioning, redefined the inner sock construction so you can step in with ease, and the support is now made of 75% recycled polyester, making their On shoes more sustainable.

In its relatively short existence On has already proved itself to be arguably the most innovative new running shoe brand on the market with their selection of On Running trainers. From the groundbreaking On Cloud shoes to the Cloudflyer, all the Cloud variants are completely distinctive from conventional distance trainers.

There are two footprints you want to be keeping an eye on when it comes to your running shoes: the one you're slapping down on the track/treadmill/tarmac, and the one you're slapping down on the environment/Earth/David Attenborough's face. The Lightstrike treads more carefully on this planet of ours than its forebear did, with a carbon foootprint 42 percent of the size. And it'll keep you light on your feet too, with its eponymous cushioning tech taking the weight out of things. e24fc04721
