Having a little fun with the open plot threads!
We sat down with the author of "Don't Bluff a Dragon, My Experiences with the Dragons of The Stellar Sea" Kasper Decklan to get some clarity of Dragons!
What is up with all the colors?
Forget what you might have heard, Color doesn't mean evil and metal doesn't mean good. It ain't that simple, you got your jerk Golds and your Heroic Reds. Maybe. I mean, I assume there are Heroic Reds, even though most I have met are big dickheads. But, it is pretty good for telling for what its gonna be breathing. Usually. Unless it's not.
So what is the color?
Well it's a kind of manifestation of a dragon's life path, philosophy, response to its environment, and probably like 50 other nuanced things including politics. End result, you see a Red, The odds are good it'll be short-tempered, live in hot places, value strength, and breath fire.
Ok ok but what is the difference between Metalic and Chromatic?
It's mostly distinction based on the philosophies of the colors. Metalics tend to be more Liberal, and Chromatics are more Conservative. You should take that with a grain of salt though. We are talking dragon definition of liberal and conservative... and the lines between the colors is not always clear, and red dragon may have a golden hue, while a silver dragon might be very white.
Ok so how do dragons work together?
As you know, dragons all share a monarchal view of the world, and do not like to acknowledge a power greater than themself. They have families, and friendships and bonds, but when a group of Dragons are working together, it is out of a shared purpose, rather than submission another’s authority.
A crude analogy might be a sports team. In a game, you got different positions that require different skills, and some positions direct other positions. Some get more play time or are crucial in certain moments, and one might even rise as a leader, but only through skill and success. Of course, there are rivalries for the choices of positions and a line of people trying to steal those spots on the team.
Ok So What about all the other other Dragons?
Well sure there are Shadow and Night and Oblivion Dragons, but most of them call themselves "Black" Dragons. Or maybe its better to say the Caucus with the Black Dragons, so they are a larger block in the greater Draconic games of domination. The Big Dragon Council has 10 seats, 1 for Red, Black, White, Green, Blue, Brass, Copper, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. So most Dragons affiliate with those, even if they are not quite in line. The Gem Dragons are a whole different thing, but like those weirdo’s probably deserve a whole book.
Sometimes you get a Dragon who tries to make a new color or something. It never goes well. You also got like sub factions and stuff, or Very powerful dragons that are sorta exceptions to the rule. But it almost always come back around to the big 10.
Do Dragons really lay eggs?
Oh Yeah, though its worth noting that dragons only have one Gender, but when they take human form they can pick a gender. However, any dragon can both lay and fertilize eggs, even their own (which i hear is frowned upon). The gender roles in those relations is way more complex then i amd gonna go into here.
Ok, we're about done, what's one thing you wish everyone knew?
Easy! So The Classic Dragon form is best thought of as the ultimate stage of adaptation. An almost perfect form (just ask them) and long long ago the first dragons became dragons by their accumulation of power. Throughout history, most Dragons weren’t born as true Dragons. Parents can pass that power on to their children, allowing them to skip the "apotheosis" but historically it took some real doing. More often, because of need, lack of power, experimentation, etc. their children became the dragon born, the kobolds, the wyvern, and other draconic creatures. You also got your draconic bloodlines, half-dragons, etc etc. In the worlds of the dragons, almost everyone has a bit of dragon blood in them somewhere, and the promise of gaining enough power to become a Dragon has driven Draconic society for generations. But it seems like these days it is becoming more and more common that Dragons are having True Dragon Children, skipping the whole apotheosis process. Dunno what that is gonna mean for them, but it sure is interesting!
