Split Happens is a companion app for bowling nights. A group of bowlers can track splits, pay into and collect from a small side pot when splits are left or converted, and optionally play a poker-style card game alongside their regular bowling. Games can be grouped into a single session and shared with everyone at the lanes via a join QR code, so the whole group stays in sync without keeping score on paper.
Q: What is the Split Happens side game?
A: Each time a player leaves a split, they add $1 to a shared pot. Converting that split later pays them back a percentage of the pot based on how hard the split was.
Q: How much does a converted split pay?
A: 10%, 30%, or 50% of the current pot, depending on the difficulty of the split.
Q: What happens to the pot at the end of a game?
A: Anything left in the pot is split evenly among all players.
Q: What is The Card Game?
A: A side game where players draw cards for strikes, spares, and doubles, then build the best 5-card poker hand by the end of the night. The winner takes the full pot.
Q: How many cards can I hold in The Card Game?
A: Five. If a draw would push you over five, you have to discard down before play continues.
Q: Does real money ever change hands?
A: No, if you actually want to play side pots, you'll manage the money yourself, these games just keep the records for your games.
Q: What's the difference between a session and a game?
A: A session groups several games together aimed at one bowling outing; each game inside has its own players, pot, and rules.
Q: How do I invite other people to my game?
A: Open the game's share screen and let everyone scan the QR code with their own copy of the app.
Q: How do I join someone else's game?
A: Tap the QR scanner from the games list and point your camera at their share code.
Q: Can I run more than one game at the same time?
A: Yes — a session can contain multiple games (for example, a Split Happens game and a Card Game running side by side).
Q: Do I need to sign up for an account?
A: No. The app provisions an anonymous key for your install automatically on first launch.
Q: What data does Split Happens store about me?
A: Only the game data you enter — display names, player names, splits, balances, and card-game state. There's no profile, email, or contact information collected.
Q: Where is my data stored?
A: Game data is stored on Split Happens' backend so other players in your session can see the same state. Basic metadata is also cached on your device for fast launches.
Q: How do I remove my data?
A: Delete the games or sessions you no longer want from the app, then delete the app itself to clear the locally cached metadata and credentials.
Q: I see a "Version not supported" screen. What do I do?
A: The backend has moved ahead of this build's compatibility version. Update to the latest version of Split Happens from the App Store.
Q: The app is stuck setting up on first launch. What do I do?
A: Your device couldn't reach the registration endpoint. Check your internet connection and reopen the app.
Q: I added a split/drew a card by mistake — can I undo it?
A: Yes. Use the Undo action on the game screen to remove the most recent transaction.
Q: A balance or transaction looks wrong.
A: Pull to refresh on the game screen to force a reload from the server.
Q: If there are no accounts, what stops one person from acting on behalf of another?
A: Nothing. This allows you to play the games with people who don't have the app, but relies on the honor system.
