Welcome!
My artwork is inspired by Batik, an ancient form of Indonesian fiber art. Hot wax is drawn on fabric in a chosen design, serving as a resist, which prevents the dye from reaching the fabric in those places. The process of waxing and dyeing is repeated several times to create colorful and elaborate designs. This form of batik (known as batik tulis) requires the skill of a master craftsman and may take several months to produce. Once known as the Spice Islands, Indonesia provided spices to the world market in medieval times and beyond. Cloves and nutmeg, native to these islands were highly prized for flavoring and preserving food. This vast archipelago consists of 20,000 islands with rich and varied languages, traditions, cuisine and art.

I am inspired by the beautiful images batik creates! Because I paint with watercolors on paper (not on cloth), I use an artist's resist medium rather than wax to mimic the batik process. After painting, the resist is removed to reveal the final design.
