All Children have rights!
The Convention on the Rights of the Child was passed by the UN at a general meeting on the 20th of November 1989. Children were already included in the general human rights, but there was a need for special rights for children – which turned into the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Currently more than 190 countries have signed the convention, which makes it the convention with the higest number of countries backing it. The Convention applies for ALL children, no matter the nationality, sex, social status, religion, and culture.
As the children association branch of the UN, UNICEF is tasked with ensuring that the convenction is upheld in all countries. The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the cornerstone in UNICEF’s work and we make sure to remind the governments to uphold what they promised when signing and that they obey the articles in the Convention.
The convention states, among other things, that all children have the right to survive. That they have the right to grow up under safe conditions and to develop. Children also have the right to be protected against abuse and discrimination, and they have the right to go to school and get an influence on their future.
