The original idea of creating a cycling club for speed skaters was emerged from a casual conversation between a masters speed skater, Kunio Tsuyuhara who happens to know a lot about cycling and cycling coaching, and the SSA's Technical Director, Lorelei St. Rose, who is also a passionate cyclist.
Even though cycling is an integral part of training for speed skaters at higher levels, most of the young skaters in our community do not take advantage of this simple and easily accessible sport activity for their physical development. And they miss the very important window of opportunity for developing aerobic endurance.
Kunio and Lorelei thought that the SSA can take the initiative as the Provincial Sport Organization to introduce cycling to the wider speed skating community in a more structured way so that those skaters (and their family) who are new to cycling can get into the sport easily.
The prototype club activities were introduced and tested during the spring and summer months of 2023, such as Spring MTB Camp and Lethbridge MTB Camp. Thanks to some young skaters who were keen on more biking, we extended our club activities to some weekend group rides in the fall months.
This is how we built the foundations of our club during the first year. We plan to build stronger into the second year and beyond.
Our mission is to grow together with the youth and junior speed skaters. Come join us!
