Mental Health Directive NYC

Written November 30th, 2022

On Tuesday, New York Mayor Eric Adams announced a directive instructing police and first responders to remove people displaying severe symptoms of mental illness from the subways and streets and take them to area hospitals, voluntarily and involuntarily. According to his office, the directive is in response to an ongoing mental health crisis leaving people with severe mental illness untreated and unsheltered in New York City. The detective would give the city's emergency response personnel a “step-by-step” process to evaluate and take people to area hospitals for evaluations. The move was criticized by some mental health professionals who said the city should focus on long term solutions and avoid treating those who refuse.
