This month, we took time to get to know each other. I introduced myself by sharing some fun facts about me in a very interactive way. Students had to guess whether the information I shared was true or false. Depending on their answer, they had to do a specific movement, such as running in place, dancing, or jumping. It was a fun activity that allowed us to learn more about one another while getting up and moving!
Later, students created and colored their name tags and drew one or two things they like on the back of their cards. This activity allowed me to get to know them better and gave us a useful tool to use during future class activities.
We continued reinforcing our routines and class norms. Students are doing such a great job helping each other with the flow of Spanish during our time together. They have also been feeling very confident using our password before entering the classroom. We started with the question, “¿Cómo te llamas?” (What is your name?) and the answer, “Me llamo…” (My name is…), followed by the expression, “Mucho gusto.” (Nice to meet you.)
We have started doing CALENDAR TALK to practice and review the days of the week, months, numbers, weather, celebrations, feelings check-ins, and fun activities students do on certain days of the week. Most importantly, Calendar Talk gives students an opportunity to use and maintain the target language—Spanish—during class.
We are and will continue reinforcing and reviewing our frequency words (Super 7+ vocabulary) throughout the year by using different strategies and techniques. Click here to access a set of digital flashcards.
Soon, we will start talking about the Monarch butterfly migration, which will also lead us to talk about Day of the Dead in November. Students in second grade will be participating in the Symbolic Migration of the Monarch Butterflies. You can find more information here.
All of the class vocabulary is introduced and practiced throughout our lessons. Students will be acquiring the language and building their vocabulary little by little as they gain confidence and continue using Spanish in class.
