Workshop on Space Robotics for Sustainable Space Activities
Workshop on Space Robotics for Sustainable Space Activities
(Formally titled “Sustainable Space Activities through Robotic Pre-deployment and Autonomous Operations”)
Part of iSpaRo 2025 (International Symposium on Space Robotics)
Date: December 4th, 9-12am JST
Place: Workshop Room, Sendai International Center
Format: in-person + online participation possible
This workshop addresses the paradigm shift from “arrival-oriented” space missions to “sustainable presence,” highlighting the indispensable role of space robotics as the precursors and custodians of extraterrestrial infrastructure.
By combining conceptual framing, agency/industry insights, and community discussion, the workshop seeks to chart a roadmap for how robotics will pioneer, construct, and maintain infrastructures for future human settlements on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Contributions are welcome on (but not limited to):
Robotic pre-deployment of infrastructure (power, habitats, ISRU plants)
Dexterous manipulation, modular assembly, and multi-robot collaboration
In-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM)
Autonomy and fleet management under deep-space communication constraints
Simulation frameworks, digital twins, and validation platforms
Robotic interfaces, standards, and modular affordances
AI-driven autonomy, explainable mission planning, and safety assurance
Lessons learned from ISS and on-orbit demonstrations and ground analog tests
For abstract submission:
Extended Abstracts (1–4 pages) in IEEE conference format are invited.
Authors may additionally provide:
- Related publications (already published, if relevant)
- Video links (optional, e.g. demonstration footage or simulation results)
All submissions will undergo a review for relevance and quality.
For accepted authors:
All accepted authors will be invited to submit (1) and/or (2):
Submit a paper* for inclusion in the workshop proceedings.
*Extended abstract (1~2 pages) or full paper (max. 8 pages)
Present a poster during the networking session.
In addition, selected authors will be eligible to:
Deliver a Lightning Talk (5–7 minutes TBD) during the workshop (selected contributions).
Authors who wish to be considered for a Lightning Talk should indicate this at the time of abstract submission (via the submission form).
At least one of the accepted authors and participants should register to the iSpaRo conference.
Abstract Submission Deadline: October 27th November 1st, 2025
Notification of Acceptance: November 6th, 2025
