How did Space Start?
Maria Rio, the founder of space, grew up spending her summers around theatre and Fado having a grandfather, Varela Silva, with a 45 year acting and directing career and a grandmother, Celeste Rodrigues, with a 70 year fado career in Lisbon. Very early she realized working with children through Drama was her gift so she began her studies in theatre and theatre education. She grew up in the rich culture of Washington DC where she was always amazed by the many artistic community centers for children. Being around these places and having her American "you can do anything you set your mind to" mentality, inspired a dream. To create a Space in Lisbon in which children can be free to be themselves. They would use this space as a vehicle to find their inner expression without any type of judgement and be the owners of their creativity. She created Space To Be in 2017 and has diligently been on this voyage in which we don´t have a set physical place but we always have plenty of space.
