Shogi: slow Chess but with paratroopers

Another favorite. While similar to Chess, three things that make Shogi more interesting are that while the pieces have lower mobility overall, captured pieces can be dropped back into play in place of moving a piece already on the board, and almost all pieces can promote.

While learning the kanji may be something of a barrier to playing with traditional sets, sites like Lishogi have sets that parallel more familiar chess pieces, as well as pieces that have icons that represent how a given piece moves.
