South Hills Stars Special Needs Programs

Where Every Star Shines Bright 

The South Hills Stars Special Needs Programs are inclusive recreational performing arts programs based out of the Bethel Park Community Center. Designed for individuals of all abilities, ages 10 and up, our programs provide opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills, make lasting friendships, and perform in the community.

Founded in Spring 2022 by Emily Columbus, the South Hills Stars began with the Special Needs Color Guard and has continued to grow into an organization that provides welcoming, supportive, and empowering opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Color Guard

The Color Guard program gives participants the opportunity to experience the excitement and creativity of color guard through flag spinning, swing flags, ribbons, pom-poms, hoops, and even introductory color guard rifles. Every activity is adapted to meet each participant's individual interests and abilities, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

The Stars meet during both the Spring and Fall seasons for approximately 10-12 classes each session. Participants develop coordination, teamwork, confidence, independence, and performance skills while having fun in a positive and encouraging environment.

In its very first season, the program welcomed nearly 30 Stars and 15 volunteers, and it continues to grow each year.

NEW! Drum Line

Beginning in August 2026, the South Hills Stars are excited to introduce the Drum Line.

This new program will teach participants the fundamentals of percussion in a fun, supportive, and sensory-friendly environment. Members will learn basic rhythms, tempo, sticking techniques, musicality, teamwork, and performance skills while playing a variety of percussion instruments. The Drum Line is designed for beginners and experienced musicians alike, with adaptations to help every participant succeed.

Drum Line will emphasize confidence, friendship, inclusion, and celebrating every individual's abilities. Participants will have opportunities to perform throughout the community alongside the South Hills Stars organization.

Community Performances

The South Hills Stars proudly perform throughout the Pittsburgh area, sharing their talents while promoting inclusion and celebrating the abilities of every participant. Performance opportunities have included:

• Bethel Park Memorial Day Parade

• Bethel Park Marching Band Festival

• Gifts of Dance Charity Show benefiting UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

• Duquesne University Women's Basketball Halftime Show

• Community 5K events

• Local nursing homes

• Community festivals and special events

• End-of-season Parent & Friends Showcase

Each season concludes with a showcase where participants celebrate everything they have learned with family and friends.

More Than a Program

South Hills Stars is more than just Color Guard or Drum Line—it is a community where everyone belongs.

Participants are encouraged to learn at their own pace, discover their strengths, and celebrate their accomplishments. Volunteers, families, and performers create meaningful friendships while supporting one another every step of the way.

The joy, determination, and unique personalities of our Stars inspire everyone they meet. Every rehearsal is filled with smiles, encouragement, laughter, and achievement, making South Hills Stars a place where confidence grows and every individual has the opportunity to shine.
