Enhydra lutris nereis
They are also known by California sea otters because they live in the waters along the central California coastline. In the early 1900s their numbers plummented due to the fur trade. A oil spill in 1977 prompted them to be listed as a threatened species. They are known for being called a "Keystone Species" because they play a critical part in keeping the ecosystem going.
The sea otter should be protected because they help out our ecosystems, without them there would be no kelp forests in the waters to help protect other fish from predators. Sea urchins (which sea otters love to eat) can overpopulate the sea floor and devour the kelp forests that provide cover and food for so many other marine animals. They also should be protected because they are just so cute!Â
