Includes the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, and the gastrointestinal tract. GI- stomach, small and large intestine, and rectum. Sea otters do not have a cecum.
Breaks down food into nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They can then be absorbed into the bloodstream so the body can use them for energy, growth, and repair.
Similar to humans, sea otters have a closed circulatory system meaning their blood travels through arteries and veins, rather than being free to be anywhere in the body.
Transports oxygen throughout their body and disposes of the carbon dioxide waste.
They have a 4 chamber heart. Also have a countercurrent heat exchange system.
Above shows the different parts of the Sea Otter's skull.
Instead of having gills they have lungs.
Their mouth and nose is the entrance of oxygen into the respiratory system. From there, it goes through the trachea then to the lungs where diffusion occurs.
The alveoli inside their lungs transfers oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood, being released in the otter's exhale.
FUN FACT: Otters can hold their breath for up to 8 minutes and
during the winter they cut holes in the ice to provide a passage to air.
Sea Otters have a polygynous mating system and show highly significant sexual dimorphism.
They have a gestation period of 4-12 months, with the average being 6months.
Male Sea Otters will bite females on the nose really hard if they want to reproduce, then he flips her onto her back, so they can mate. If she does not want to mate, she will slap the water and dive into the water.
Female Sea Otters can have 2 babies born at once, but they usually will abandon one of them. Only 2% of sea otter births are multiples.
Sea Otters birth throughout the year with the peaks being in March and September.
They have a life expectancy is 10-15 years, even up to 20 years.
