Have you ever wondered why they are called the Dap-ag Boys? “Dap-ag” is the Visayan term for the Crown of Thorns starfish (COT) a coral predator that threatens reefs.
From humble beginnings as free divers in Liloan, Southern Leyte, the Dap-ag Boys have become dedicated guardians of the sea. With dives lasting 5–10 minutes, they can remove over 500 Crown of Thorns starfish a day, helping protect countless corals from destruction.
For them, diving is more than adventure, it is a mission to preserve marine life and inspire others to care for the ocean. Their legacy lives not only in the starfish they remove, but in the reefs they save and the generations they inspire to become stewards of the sea.

During a rapid assessment in Barangay Maningning, Malitbog, barangay officials invited us to explore the Bun-Ot River through river trekking instead of the usual trails. We were amazed by the river’s untouched beauty—clear waters, lush greenery, and dramatic rock formations. Natural pools and small cascades created a peaceful, scenic atmosphere, while towering trees and rich biodiversity highlighted the area's ecological value.
Some sections have been modestly developed for picnics, with shaded huts built by locals along the banks. These simple efforts reflect the community’s commitment to ecotourism and conservation, balancing access with the preservation of the river’s natural charm.

On April 11, 2025, the Provincial Tourism Office embarked on another exploration—this time to Barangay Caraatan, Malitbog, to assess the potential of Bendita Falls as a future tourist destination.
Nestled within forested hills, Bendita Falls features five cascading levels of varying flows, offering a serene yet dramatic natural spectacle. Reaching the topmost falls requires a 30-minute downhill hike from the Barangay Hall, with trails that, while manageable, need improvement for future tourism use.
Bendita Falls stands out as a promising eco-tourism site, combining natural beauty, accessibility, and enthusiastic community support. With proper planning and cooperation, it can become a model for inclusive, sustainable tourism in Southern Leyte.
Special thanks to Punong Barangay, the Barangay Council, Barangay Tanods, and especially the Barangay Councilor for their warm welcome and support!
