i collected my bigleaf maple (acer macrophyllum) seeds from this tree, which is located in Trabuco Canyon, on a north facing slope close to Rancho Santa Margarita. this ecotype thrives in the mild winters, and is one of the southernmost populations of this species.

as soon as i got back home, i excised some of the seeds (removed from pericarp) to speed up germination. then, i soaked the seeds (excised and intact seeds) in room temperature water for 24 hours in a plastic container. some of the excised seeds started to plump up by the time i removed them from the water.

after the soak, i removed the bigleaf maple seeds and spread them on moist paper towel, put the towel in a ziplock bag, and put the bag very back of the fridge for cooler temperatures.

about a week later, i checked the seeds for any sprouting. one seed already sprouted and the root was emerging.

in 2 weeks, more seeds were sprouting, but there was not much of a change, but the root on the sprouted seed from last week grew larger and greener. i decided to remove the testa of one seed to see what would happen. i noticed the excised seeds germinated much faster.

A long time later ,the seeds have long since germinated and grown. its been 90 days since the last update. i forgot to update this website. but the bigleaf maple seedlings are growing pretty fast, and will probably reach 4 feet by the end of the year.
