Within days FBI, etc. come for Japanese people - people arrested for nothing basically…
Feb 9 42...all fisherman arrested sent to dakotas
Shortly thereafter everyone else moved to detention centers.
San Pedro Japanese businesses looted and destroyed.
WWII exploded activity at the port….war workers poured in.
Fort McArthur in San Pedro…
Navy took over port… Lots of ship building shifts into high gear - Liberty Ships...nearly a ship a day...totally outfitted at the shipyards..LOTS of Rosies 15%
Beacon Street was the famous red light district…
War Ends… Japanese return. Stores homes demolished...end of that community on terminal island. Some tried to make it anyway...but there was some measure of welcome back because they were after all part of the the local communities.
