Huge number of laborers needed.

Oil boom in 1920s...wilmington had oil.

Loads of money made - much of reinvested locally.

Shell, Union, Texaco had refiners.

LA surpasses SF as the major port on the west coast in the 1920s.

Upgrades in the 1920s...including a new rail link onto terminal island.’[‘’l’

Los Angeles Steamship Company - “cruises” to Honolulu - and freight service….some of today’s cruise ship ideas (pools etc.) were pioneered.

Died out with Great Depression

1923 Upton Sinclair arrested by LAPD for trying to make a speech in San Pedro.

KKK didn’t like IWW...smashed up there .

1920s… Dead Man’s Island removed.

1927 - LA Second Largest Port in the US.
