In 2024, Abbott provided a grant for the purchase of a field utility vehicle! This vehicle is used for transporting team equipment and water. In addition, the medical training staff utilizes it for on-field injury transport.
In 2023, Yankee Ford purchased a trailer for our equipment storage and transport!

Aaron Filieo (Head Coach, Offensive & Defensive Line) Coach Filieo is entering his 22nd season as a head coach - the first 15 years at Cape Elizabeth. Prior to coaching in Cape Elizabeth, Aaron served as an assistant football coach at his alma mater, South Portland High School, from 1997 to 2002. As a player for SP, Coach Filieo, a Captain and all-state nose guard, helped lead his undefeated team to a state championship in 1992. He currently teaches 7th grade at Cape Middle School and resides in South Portland with his family - Kari, Mia, Laney & Eli.
Jason Cooke (Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks & Defensive Backs) Jason Cooke returns in 2025 for his 20th season with the Red Riot coaching staff. In 2016, Coach Cooke was recognized as the Guy Lajeunesse Assistant Coach of the Year in the SMAA. A South Portland alum, Coach Cooke was a Riot captain and all-conference performer. As the South Portland quarterback, he led the Riots to a 24-0 record and two consecutive class A State titles. Jason started his college career as a two-sport athlete playing football and baseball at the University of Rhode Island where he finished his career with the Rams baseball program. Jason has also coached baseball at SPHS for the past 1 seasons and works as the Head Groundskeeper for the Portland Sea Dogs. He lives in South Portland with his wife Natasha and son Caiden.
Rob Kierstead (Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers & Running Backs) Coach Kierstead has previously coached the Riots from 2003-2010. Since 2010 Rob has coached in South Portland's youth football. He also served as the DC for Deering High School 2013-2014, player/coach for the NEFL Maine Sabers 2013 and Raging Bulls 2015-2016. Coach Kierstead is a former Riot captain where he led the defense to 2 state championships and a then record 31 straight wins. While at South Portland coach Kierstead was a 2 time All-Conference, 2 time All-State and Fitzpatrick trophy finalist. Rob was a 4 year letter winner and 3 year starter for the University of Maine where he helped lead them to the 2001 & 2002 Atlantic-10 titles and NCAA playoffs. Coach Kierstead earned the Woody Carville Senior Achievement Award in 2002. Rob resides in South Portland with his wife Jess and their children Blake, Chloe, Nathan, Olivia, and Isaac.
Nate Davis (Wide Receivers & Defensive Backs) Coach Davis is entering his 10th season as a Wide Receiver Coach. Coaching Cape Elizabeth High School from 2016-2018 and returned home to South Portland for these last 6 years. He gets his discipline from his time spent in the US Navy, and playing football at South Portland in the late 90's. His football playing experience was being a two way starter his junior and senior seasons 96,97, which was part of the 31-0 run. He was an all-conference WR in 1997, having the best hands in the state. Nathan resides in South Portland with his felines Chet and Brutus, and works as a
plumber for the city across the bridge.
Bob Ganley (Defensive Ends/Tight Ends Coach) Coach Ganley is entering his 7th season as a Red Riot football coach. As a player at South Portland, he was a varsity member of the 1995 and 1996 state championship teams, and a two-time all-conference and all-state defensive end. At the 1998 Shrine Bowl, he earned MVP honors for the victorious West squad. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he played football, Coach Ganley resides in South Portland and currently teaches History at Old Orchard Beach High School.
Jason Perry (Strength and Conditioning Coach) This is Jason’s 7th year with the Red Riot football program. He has previously coached youth baseball. He played football under Coach Art Greenlaw at Stearns High School in the 1980s. Jason spent 12 years in the US Military and is a career Firefighter/Paramedic (20+ yrs service) serving as a Lieutenant at South Portland Ladder 45. He holds certifications from the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer and Firefighter Peer Fitness Trainer with specialty certifications in Strength and Conditioning and Functional Training. Fitness. He also holds a certification from American Kettlebell Club earned through Kettlebell New York (KBNY) Coach Mike Stefano.
Wayne Richards (Defensive Quality Control) Coach Richards enters his 5th season working with the Red Wave defense. He spent 23 years at Bucksport High School, 19 of those as the defensive coordinator. They had quite a run that included 1 State Championship, 3 State appearances, and 10 Eastern Maine Championship game appearances. Wayne also spent 3 years at Morse as defensive coordinator. Coach Richards resides in Brunswick with his wife, Michelle. In addition, his daughter, Jana, serves as our youth safety officer and his grandsons, Eli and Finn, are young Red Riots in the program.
Aaron Radziucz (Offensive Quality Control) Coach Radziucz enters his 4th year working with the Red Riot football program. He is a South Portland alum that graduated in 2016. While a student at South Portland, he played football and baseball for four years and was named a captain of the football team in 2015. A University of Maine graduate, Coach Radziucz lives in South Portland and works as a civil engineer at Sebago Technics.
Chris Salamone (JV Head Coach) Coach Salamone is in his 2nd year of coaching for the Red Riots. Coach Sal has been coaching the Middle School and Youth tackle teams for the past four seasons. Coach Sal is an SP alum, graduating in 1997 and serving as class president. He was a Running Back and Kick Returner on the 1995 & 1996 Red Riot State Championship Football teams, while also being a State Champion and team captain of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. He continued his track and field career at Dickinson College, where he graduated in 2001. Coach Sal currently resides in South Portland with his wife, Monica. Their two sons, Christopher and Logan are both proud members of the SP football, lacrosse, and track and field programs.
Caden Horton (JV Assistant) Coach Horton begins his 3rd year as a football coach here at South Portland. He is a South Portland alum who graduated with the class of 2019. While attending high school, Caden played four years of baseball and football, as well as two years of basketball. He’s excited and grateful to be able to learn more about the game of football and get to work with all these young athletes who he hopes are just as excited as he is. Coach Horton is also the JV baseball coach at SP! Caden works at Total Property Service and resides in Old Orchard Beach.
Kevin Healy (JV Assistant, Special Teams Coordinator) Coach Healy begins his 2nd year with the high school program. He is an Alumni of Broadneck High School in Annapolis, MD and played basketball at Anne Arundel Community College. Kevin spent 21 years in the United States Marine Corps retiring in 2022 at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Coach Healy resides in South Portland with his wife Mae, a South Portland Alumni and his three children, Easton, Shea, and Lucy.
Greg Allain (JV Assistant) Coach Allain will be entering his 1st year with the South Portland High School football program. Coach Allain received an MBA from Norwich University and works for Pratt & Whitney. Greg's previous coaching includes 2 yrs with Cape Elizabeth Middle School under Coach Filieo, 2 yrs at Cheverus High School and most recently 1 yr at South Portland Middle School. Coach Allain currently resides in North Waterboro with his wife Aleta and he has 3 grown children.
Jim Clark (Operations Director) Jim begins his 10th season working with Coach Filieo. Jim played Division III football for NCAA champion Wittenberg in Ohio and, after graduation, spent three years coaching varsity football at St. Albans School for Boys in Washington DC. He has retired from Accenture, and lives with his wife, Ann, and their lab, Fiona, in Cape Elizabeth. They have two daughters, Colleen living in Portland, and Kat, with husband Michael, living in New York City.
Chris Mims (Technology Coordinator) This is Coach Mims’ 17th season working with Coach Filieo - coaching just about every position other than quarterback! Coach Mims was awarded the Assistant Coach of the year in 2016 while at Cape Elizabeth. Chris is also a South Portland football alum who played on two state championship teams. Chris resides in Scarborough with his wife Lisa and their children- Dante, Chiara, and Anna.
