About us

The South Asia Funnel was formed in Spring 2023 and falls under the Library of Congress Cooperative Cataloging Program known as SACO (Subject Authority Cooperative Program).  We collaborate closely with the Committee on South Asian Libraries and Documentation (CONSALD), a professional organization for librarians/catalogers specializing in South Asia.  The idea for the funnel first emerged from a CONSALD listserv discussion on some outdated and offensive subject headings. CONSALD hosted a panel at its Fall 2022 Meeting to discuss these concerns and established a taskforce to investigate possible solutions. The taskforce recommended the creation of a SACO funnel.  After receiving generous guidance from members of the African American Subject Funnel, the CONSALD taskforce transitioned into the South Asia Funnel.  We hold monthly meetings and our members include catalogers and librarians from the United States, Canada, and India.
