Source Evaluation

Module Objective

Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  • Determine if a source is appropriate for the intended use.

  • Develop strategies to fact check sources.

  • Recognize editorial and personal biases when evaluating sources.

  • Identify differing viewpoints encountered in sources.

  • Critically evaluate data and their sources.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

This module will teach you how to evaluate sources for currency, relevancy, accuracy, authority, and purpose. This ensures you will be able to choose reliable sources for you research needs.

USING SOURCE EVALUATION ELEMENTS

These five elements do not exist in a vacuum. Just because a source is current does not mean it is accurate. Just because it was written by an authority, does not mean it relevant. Therefore, as you evaluate your sources, be sure to check them using all 5 elements.

WHAT TO DO

  1. There are 5 sections, one for each element.

    • Review all the content for each section.

    • Complete the self-check to make sure you understand the content before you move on to the next.

  2. At the end of the module, complete the graded Module Quiz.

  3. If required for your course, save or print the Certificate of Completion so you can turn it in.
