Welcome to CREATE Lab !!

CREATE (Cooling, Refrigeration and Emerging Applications in Thermal Engineering) is a research laboratory led by Prof. Sourav Mitra, located within the Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. Our mission is to develop next-generation thermal engineering technologies that improve energy efficiency and sustainability, while addressing emerging global challenges.

At CREATE Lab, we seek answers to the fundamental scientific questions with strong thermal engineering applications. Some of these are mentioned below:

Can porous materials revolutionize refrigeration?

Certain porous materials can selectively adsorb and store gas molecules. We investigate how this phenomenon can be harnessed for refrigeration and air-conditioning applications, while also developing experimental techniques to accurately characterize such materials in the laboratory.

Can refrigeration systems become hybrid?

Hybrid vehicles combine thermal energy and electricity to improve efficiency. We explore whether refrigeration and air-conditioning systems can similarly combine thermal and electrical energy sources to create more sustainable cooling technologies.

How can modern air-conditioners become more sustainable?

At CREATE lab we are working on new refrigerants and refrigerant mixtures which can improve energy efficiency, environmental compatibility and long-term sustainability of air-conditioning systems.

How can supercritical carbon dioxide transform thermal engineering?

Supercritical carbon dioxide (s-CO2) exhibits unique thermo-physical properties. We study how these properties can be exploited in advanced thermal systems for improved performance and efficiency.

Can liquid cooling in data centers become safer?

As high-performance computing demands continue to grow, we develop safer liquid cooling technologies that minimize leakage risks while maintaining efficient thermal management for large data centers.

Can clean drinking water be harvested directly from air?

We investigate technologies capable of extracting potable water directly from atmospheric moisture, with emphasis on identifying efficient and practical solutions for diverse climatic conditions.
