...music...is never going to cure a disease, and it can't repair damaged tissue. But it can help us to deal with whatever pain or distress we have in our lives, and that can ultimately make us healthier. - Suzanne Hanser
If you ever turned up your favorite song and sang along, you have experienced sound therapy. When listening to the peaceful sounds of the ocean, a river, song birds or the rustling of the leaves in the wind, you experience sound therapy. Sound is able to change our mood, release our stress and change our outlook on life. In my practice of sound therapy, I play music that is designed to de-stress your mind, relax your body and help you to refresh your spirit.
"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent" - Victor Hugo
In my practice of sound therapy, the sounds you will experience from singing bowls, bells and gongs will relax your mind and spirit. You will encounter a symphony of sounds that will allow you to leave the cares and stresses of this world behind. How you participate in this therapy will depend on the location and type of experience. Some of my events include meditations while others include walks through a labyrinth. Others experiences are more intimate and the only sounds you will hear are the tender sensations flowing from the instruments.
"The theory of relativity occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition….My new discovery was the result of musical perception" - Albert Einstein
The ancient texts of the Old and New Testaments are full of wonderful ways that music has been used. Some of ways include: Soothing a troubled mind, prayer and meditation, thanksgiving, and the healing of people. Today, we understand that soft music soothes our mind and spirit. It easily causes our thoughts to drift away from the tension, stress of life.
"the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts" - Oliver W. Holmes
According to Marlynn Wei, M.D.,J.D. different musical frequencies affect different parts of our mind in various ways. The frequencies generated by the instruments I use affect the area of the mind that is associated with daydreaming. Dr. Wei terms these "Theta brainwaves" . They are associated with creativity flow and ideas. You have encountered this if you ever started on a task, got bored and drifted off into a day dream. People also experience this mental state when they complete a task and take some time to rest.
In an article at the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health the authors observed that sound meditation reduces tension and stress. They recommend the use of music therapy to "induce the relaxation response, reduce stress, and potentially stress-related disease in the body."
"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain" - Bob Marley
