Amelia is an Artist whose work is best expressed through her portrait paintings, photography, and delicate use of threads and stitching. Her art revolves around themes of identity, tranformation, and the quiet beauty found in daily existence.
Deeply influenced by the concepts of home, relationships, and the nostalgia of the ordinary, Amelia's pieces often explore warm and familiar artistic styles. Through these, she invites viewers to reconsider common perceptions of the human experience, urging them to find richness in what may initially seem mundane.
Within the soft strokes of paint and the loose threads of string, Amelia's work seeks to evoke a sense of familiarity and relatability, offering comfort in the representation of the everday as something extraordinary.
In her view, the ordinary is, in fact, the most extraordinary.
2024, A3 photograph printed on canvas, acrylic paint and white string sewn into the surface.
Who we are is an ever-changing process, a lifetime of continuous development, learning and transformation. This piece explores the idea of our metamorphosising identities, shown through the painted, pure butterfly spread across the subject's back, and the white threads sewn in; imbedded, secure, and permanent. The threads drape lightly to the floor growing along the space, depicting the natural elements of our metamorphosis, by mirroring the roots of a tree. Yet these lengthy, never ending roots, show how our identities are a continuous journey, an endless transformation.
2025, A series of 5 stills from 'Appearance' film, printed on paper and mounted.
Diving into the relationship between physicality and one's 'soul' and identity, I created a short film exploring appearance and beauty through an intimate, poetic lens - presented through five stills. Drawing from recent research, I focused on capturing delicate, minute details of my appearance, alongside soft, scenic visuals to evoke a sense of grace and introspection. The choice to wear lace reflects an ongoing interest of mine in how materials (particularly ones with a great history like lace) shape and signify identity. Through these skills, I hope to broaden the ideas behind how we each present ourselves to the public, and how this can affect the way our soul is viewed.
2025, Movie of slides, involving images from 'performativity' photography.
Rooted in the ethereal and intangiblem this film presents my blurred, motion-based photography through moving images. Inspired by the haunting works of Francesca Woodman, the piece navigates my greatest interests in memory, transformation, and the ephemeral nature of identity. Rather than exhibiting still image photography pieces, I use projection to isolate each frame in a style reminiscent of archival familty footage, enhancing the dream-like quality and deepening the narrative, to echo themes of the past and transformation that runs throughout my work. Sound is essential to me in creating an immersive experience. Therefore, for this film, I've layered audio elements - looms, sewing machines, and fluttering wings - that are symbolic of the materials and themes I use within my visual practice, including threads and the metamorphosis and growth. By combining image and sound, create this sensory environment, I invite viewers to linger in the quiet spaces between memory and material.
2025, Photography of various sizes.
This series of photographs examines the quiet, intimate details that shape physical identity, as from recent research, I have discovered just how vital physicality is in creating our sense of self. Inspired by the delicate, observational work of Christophe Agou and Kelley O'Brien, these photographs aim to capture the natural, unfiltered presence of the body. Through close-up imagery and soft, subtle emotion, the work reflects on appearance as a form of self-expression and connection - inviting viewers to find a sense of familiarity and humanitiy within each frame. This natural and effortless effect was something I wished to emulate in these pieces, as I wanted to portray the most real forms of my physical being - a true portrayal of my body and identity. I hope to evoke a sense of love and relatability here, as you view these pieces.
2025, Lace hung in various places around the space.
Through navigating the concept of identities and the soul, I have come to see how often we veil our identities, feeling the need to quietly restrain ourselves or leave our identities softly hidden. To elaborate on this, I have experimented with the concept of the 'veil' - a barrier between one's internal and external self-suggested through the long length of lace installations decorating the space. I invite you to move through these fabrics, symbols of the invisible barriers we place between who we are and who we show. To enter, you may need to brush past these veils and interact with them, just as we must sometimes brush past fear, or expectation to uncover what is most honest within ourselves.
