OFFICIAL RULES. NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. OPEN ONLY TO individuals who are at least 16 years of age on or before their entry into the Promotion (defined below). Such individuals must be a legal resident of one of the fifty United States or the District of Columbia as of March 1, 2018. ENTRANTS MUST BE A STUDENT OF PALOMA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL IN MENIFEE, CALIFORNIA, ON TRACK TO GRADUATE WITH A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IN 2018. SCHOLARSHIP WILL ONLY BE AWARDED ONCE GRADUATION DEGREE HAS BEEN CONFERRED. IN THE EVENT THAT ENTRANT HAS NOT BEEN CONFERRED A DEGREE OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION BY SEPTEMBER 1, 2018, ENTRANT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Immediate relatives of the Board of Directors of The Sotero Scholarship Foundation or Judges appointed by the Board of Directors are not eligible to apply.

VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. THE ACT OF ENTERING THIS PROMOTION CONSTITUTES ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES AS CONTAINED HEREIN AND OF THE DECISIONS OF SPONSOR, WHICH ARE FINAL AND BINDING IN ALL RESPECTS.

1.PROMOTION PERIOD: The entry period for The Marjorie Sotero Scholarship (the “Scholarship”) begins on March 1, 2018, at 12:00 AM PST (the “Scholarship Start Date”) and ends on May 1, 2018 at 11:59 PM PDT (the “Scholarship End Date”) (collectively, the “Scholarship Period”). Prizes have limited promotional entry, ending, and selection periods as noted below.

2.SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION: The Scholarship is a skill-based scholarship, the object of which is to provide your best possible answer to the prompt posted on https://www.soterofoundation.org/apply for the Scholarship / Period (each, a “Submission”). Each Submission must adhere to the following standards:

  • The text must exceed 1000 words and must not exceed 2000 words.
  • All essays must address the specific prompt presented during Scholarship Period, must be original, must not have been previously published, released, or distributed, and must have been created and must be owned exclusively by you. Publication of your essay must not violate any legal obligations that you have or the legal rights of any third party. Once submitted by you, Sponsor may post your submission on a publicly accessible web site or disseminate your submission through print and broadcast media either during or following the contest. Sponsor disclaims any and all liability for any infringement of any third parties' rights in any submission caused by you.
  • Content must not be of an offensive or explicit nature.
  • Essay must follow an organized, multiple-paragraph format.
  • Essay must exhibit the standard rules of grammar & mechanics.

3.HOW TO ENTER: Only one entry per person will be eligible during the Scholarship Period. Entry dates for the Scholarship Period commence at 12:00 AM PST on the Scholarship Start Date and close at 11:59 PM PDT on the Scholarship End Date (collectively, the “Scholarship Entry Period”). Any attempt by a participant to enter more than once during the Scholarship Entry Period may result in disqualification of all entries submitted by that participant for the entire Scholarship Period. Internet Entry Method: Participants may enter this Promotion during the Promotion Entry Period via the Internet by logging on to https://www.soterofoundation.org/apply and providing all required information. All Internet entries must be submitted and received before the Scholarship Entry End Date to be considered for any prize drawings. Each submission must not contain copyrighted materials or any other materials that may be restricted, prohibited, or outlawed by federal, state, or local laws.

4.JUDGING AND AWARDING OF PRIZE: JUDGING. One Grand Prize Winner will be chosen from all eligible submissions received during the Scholarship Entry Period. One Runner Up will also be chosen in the event Grand Prize Winner becomes ineligible and is not awarded the Scholarship. Judging will be conducted by a panel of no fewer than three Judges, as appointed by the Board of Directors of The Sotero Scholarship Foundation. Judging criteria will be provided within the application instructions. The decisions of the judges are final and fully discretionary.

The Sotero Scholarship Foundation is not responsible for internet service outages, delays, equipment malfunctions, and any other technological difficulties that may prevent an individual from completing an online Submission. The judges will announce the Grand Prize Winner from among all of the eligible entries within thirty (30) days after the Scholarship End Date (the “Winner Selection Date”). All judging is conducted under the supervision of the Sponsor whose decisions are final in all matters relating to the Scholarship. Odds of winning depend on the total number of eligible entries received.

5.PRIZES: One (1) Grand Prize per Promotion Period equal to $500 Scholarship shall be awarded for the Scholarship Period. The total value of all prizes to be given away is $500. No substitution, cash equivalent, transfer, or assignment of the Grand Prize is permitted except at the sole discretion of Sponsor, who reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value in the event a prize is unavailable for any reason. Winners are responsible for payment of all federal, state, and local taxes on the Grand Prize and for any other expenses associated with the Grand Prize not specifically described herein. Except where prohibited by law, each potential winner will be awarded his or her prize only after such winner’s eligibility has been verified and such potential winner has completed (1) a statement of eligibility, and (2) any other documentation reasonably requested by Sponsor. Failure by the potential winner to return such executed documents within thirty (30) days after request by the Sponsor may result in disqualification of the potential winner. The Grand Prize shall be made payable to the individual winner (or parent or legal guardian), and is intended for use during the 2018/2019 school year to an accredited college, university, or other institution of higher learning in the United States.

6.ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility is limited to individuals who are at least 16 years of age on or before their entry into the Scholarship. Such individuals must be a legal resident of one of the fifty United States or the District of Columbia as of March 1, 2018. ENTRANTS MUST BE A STUDENT OF PALOMA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL IN MENIFEE, CALIFORNIA, ON TRACK TO GRADUATE WITH A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IN 2018. SCHOLARSHIP WILL ONLY BE AWARDED ONCE GRADUATION DEGREE HAS BEEN CONFERRED. IN THE EVENT THAT ENTRANT HAS NOT BEEN CONFERRED A DEGREE OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION BY SEPTEMBER 1, 2018, ENTRANT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Immediate relatives of the Board of Directors of The Sotero Scholarship Foundation or Judges appointed by the Board of Directors are not eligible to apply. Previous winners of Scholarship may not enter again. The Scholarship is subject to all federal, state, and local laws and is void where prohibited by law. Any person that is otherwise prohibited by contract, law, or other rule from participating in contests of a nature similar to the Scholarship is not eligible to win any prizes in conjunction with the Scholarship. By participating, participants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and to accept the decisions of the Sponsor as final in all matters relating to this Scholarship.

7.NOTIFICATION: Winner will be notified via email or by telephone on or before the Winner Selection Date. Failure by potential winner to respond to such notification within ten (10) days after Sponsor’s first attempt, failure by the potential winner to adhere to these Official Rules, or the return of the Grand Prize as undeliverable will result in disqualification of the potential winner and an alternate winner will be selected.

8.DISCLAIMER: The Sponsor is not responsible for typographical or other errors in the printing, the offering, or the administration of the Scholarship, or in the announcement of prizes. The Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, undeliverable, or incomplete entries due to system errors or failures, or faulty transmissions or other telecommunications malfunctions and/or entries not received resulting from any hardware or software failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incomplete or garbled computer or telephone transmissions, typographical or system errors and failures, or faulty transmissions, or for any problems or technical malfunction(s) of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, or entries not received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet, or at a web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from entering the Scholarship or downloading any material for the Scholarship, or other telecommunications malfunctions which may limit a participant’s ability to participate.

9.LIMITATION OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNIFICATION. Except where prohibited by law, Scholarship participants hereby release from all liability, loss, damage, or injury resulting from, and agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Sponsor and its parents, companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, managers, members, employees, and agents against any and all liability, damages or causes of action (however named or described), with respect to or arising out of (i) participant’s participation in the Scholarship; (ii) the receipt or use of any prize awarded, or (iii) use of any information or materials provided by participant to Sponsor for purposes of this Scholarship (including, without limitation, submission of and Sponsor’s use of participant’s Submission). Prizes are awarded “AS-IS,” and Sponsor, and its employees and agents have neither made nor are in any manner responsible or liable for any warranty, representation, guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to any prize including, but not limited to, its quality, condition, or fitness for a particular purpose. Sponsor is not responsible for and shall not be liable for lost, late, delayed, incomplete, unreadable, garbled, inaccurate, or erroneously transmitted Submissions or information provided by Scholarship participants.

10.MODIFICATION AND TERMINATION: In the event the Scholarship is compromised by unauthorized human intervention, tampering, mechanical or electronic failures, or other causes beyond the reasonable control of the Sponsor, which corrupt or impair the administration, security, fairness, or proper operation of the Scholarship, the Sponsor reserves the right, but not the obligation, in its sole discretion to void any entries submitted fraudulently or to suspend, modify or terminate the Scholarship, in which case the Sponsor shall not be required to award any prize or substitute prize. The Sponsor will prosecute any and all fraudulent activities to the fullest extent of the law.

11.ADDITIONAL PROMOTION CONDITIONS: Each Grand Prize winner will be required to complete and submit an IRS Form W-9 with the winner’s full Social Security Number or the equivalent for receipt of any prize valued at $600 or more or for any prizes awarded by the Sponsor in a calendar year with an aggregate value of $600 or more. Failure to submit a complete W-9 or equivalent will result in forfeiture of the Grand Prize. Such winnings of $600 or more will be reported to the IRS. By participating in the Scholarship, each participant assigns ownership of his or her Submission to Sponsor, including all rights to print, publish, broadcast, edit and use, worldwide in any media now known or hereafter developed, at any time or times, such Submission. Winning participants hereby grant Sponsor and its licensees, affiliates and assigns the right to print, publish, broadcast, edit and use, worldwide in any media now known or hereafter developed, their respective names, portraits, pictures, voices, likenesses and biographical information as news or information and for advertising and promotional purposes relating to this Scholarship and Sponsor’s products or services without additional financial or other compensation, unless prohibited by law. By providing information to Sponsor pursuant to this Scholarship, each participant consents to Sponsor’s use of such information for promotional or any other purposes allowed by law. Each participant also represents and warrants that any and all materials submitted for entry into this Promotion are such participant’s own, that such participant owns all rights, interest, and title to any and all such materials, and that participant has secured any necessary consents or waivers from third parties relating to such materials. Winners further agree to appear for any presentation or other activity which may include filming, audio, video, electronic or other recordings and/or interviews as may be determined from time to time by the Sponsor, unless prohibited by law. By providing information pursuant to this Scholarship, the participant consents to the Sponsor’s use of such information for promotional or any other purposes allowed by law.

12.WINNER’S LIST: For the name of the winners during the Scholarship Period send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: The Marjorie Sotero Scholarship Winners List 2018, 1724 Claiborne St., Mandeville, LA 70448.

13.SPONSOR: The Sotero Scholarship Foundation. Sponsor reserves the right to modify or end the Scholarship at any time.
