Day 3 - Soil and Water Samples 7/23
Day 3 - Soil and Water Samples 7/23
A wet day at the stream today. It should be noted that my town got a bit of rain last night and this morning. While the flow of the water did not seem much faster, I noticed a slight increase of silt and sediment at the bottom.
Some water samples from today. The larger one with the blue cap is unfiltered, while the smaller one with the green cap was filtered through a syringe equipped with a water filter.
A soil sample from today, taken from outside my house. The soil was obtained from 5 different areas around my house, shown in the following picture.
Quick sketches of the brook from today.
Stream Stats from today.
Ph: 6.6
Temp: 21.0 C
Conductivity: 18.8 microseimins per cm.
Unfortunately(or I guess fortunately) there were no results from my E.Coli production test. This result confused me because my stream is near a decently busy road and quite a few houses, so I assumed due to the amount of human interference with the environment that some colonies would form. However, after 48 hours there was no development. A possible reason for this could have been the temperature of the area I kept it in. My garage is detached from my house, and it was kept there. When preparing the test I ruled out the possibility of that tampering with the test results because the room is usually well insulated and stays at a moderate temperature. Nevertheless there is a chance that the climate interfered.
Written Reflection: Day 3
Today was a quick and easy day. The influx of rain made it interesting to see the change in statistics. The largest thing I noticed was the increase in conductivity, as it had been constant for the past 2 days. I wonder how the rain might have affected that. The soil sample was a bit difficult because the grass in my yard is very thick. Working past the roots proved a challenge. Finally, obtaining the water samples went smoothly, no issues with filtering.
