Day 1 - Visiting the stream and completing Riptarian Stream Health Assessment.
I chose a section with several riffles and one or two pools. One thing I noticed upon visiting the stream was that it was very fast moving. In general I believe this is mostly due to the recent flooding, and it may have been slower in the past.
Another thing I noticed was that there was a stone wall built around and over the stream. It seemed to be very old, many of the rocks had been overgrown with vegetation.
Another example of this.
On my way back I journeyed a bit up stream. Something I found interesting was that there were sections with extremely fast whitewater.
I was confused because right next to it there was a tiny, drained stream. My current hypothesis is that this smaller section was formed entirely due to the flood, and as the water levels sank it returned to its normal width.
Final results from my stream habitat assessment. The total score was 151/200.
Some observations and sketches from today.
Stream Stats from today.
Ph : 6.3
Temp: 20.4 C
Conductivity: 18.4 microseimins per cm.
Written reflection - Day 1
While I had visited this area in the past, this was the first time I was looking at it in a more analytical way. After expanding my knowledge of the more finer characteristics of stream life, I was able to see and understand what I was looking at further. Today was a great day for first impressions and examination of my local environment. Additionally, it was fun for me to see some of the man made aspects near it. I'm hoping to explore some of that history later. Today also included the E. Coli testing. I'm interested in seeing its results soon!
