In a culminating assignment for my Atypical Development practicum course, I presented the key reflections, observations, hypotheses, and outcomes involved in my mentorship experience with Blue; a Grade 2 student whom I helped with reading and self-regulation.
Distinct from clinical and teaching placements, my role as a mentor was to establish a trusting and professional relationship with my mentee, gain an understanding of their environment, and integrate a behavioural goal plan that was tailored to their specific challenges. This mutually beneficial experience offered my mentee a role-model and myself, an opportunity to apply and adopt a more humanized perspective to course content.
